We had a good meeting last week on the theme of Tondos: we discussed where the word came from, as well as the Art which, as usual, showed a wide range of interpretations including: calligraphy, landscapes (including one that will be in the Beckenham Place Park exhibition next week) , an ethereal almost abstract map of Alaska and thea really ingenious idea of using the reflection in a crystal ball as the subject (thanks Paul, I will definitely be stealing this idea!)

The next Art Matters Meeting will be 7pm Friday 13th August. What could possibly go wrong?

The theme this time will be Art that includes Text this can be calligraphy but can also text incorporated into the image. .

As promised these are some of the Artists who were mentioned in a workshop I attended on the subject last week - the theory being that Text was very common in Art in the medieval period, seemed to disappear in Western Art and then reappear in the 20th century I have included some contemporary Artists but left out the conceptual ones(well except one maybe). So maybe one of these will bring some inspiration:

Medieval Altar Pieces (e.g. Van Eyck’s Ghent Altar Piece)
Illuminated manuscripts
Islamic Art
Chinese/Japanese calligraphy

Tom Phillips A Humument
Jasper Johns
Cy Twombly
Jean Michel Basquiat
Cubist collages
Simon Patterson: The Great Bear
Kurt Jackson

And maybe we could also include Altered books in the theme

Look forward to seeing your interpretation and I am sure this could well spark a good discussion on the day.

As usual any interpretation and medium. WIP is acceptable and you are welcome to join us even if you haven’t “done your homework”

Look forward to seeing you there.

Deborah

PS Due to my focus on the BPP exhibition I am behind with posting images from previous Art Matters session to the website so if you would like your work to be included (and/or you would like your work to be included in the Main Gallery) then please email me and I will endeavour to post them soon.
