Dear All,

*Change to our Scheduled Demonstration Friday 9th April & Reminder for
our Art Matters Art History challenge Friday 12th April.*

It is with regret that we have decided to postpone Richard Waldron's
demonstration for this Friday 9th April  due to his continuing poor
health. He is still recovering from his bout of Covid and at times
continues to struggle with long Covid symptoms. We have therefore agreed
that it would be better for Richard to conduct a live demo later in the
year when hopefully we can all meet up in person again. A am glad to say
he still an active member and participates occasionally in our Zoom
meetings.

Luckily we have been able to secure a *Martin Ireland* to replace
Richard at very short notice. His demonstration theme will be the male
figure swimming.

Martin is a local Artist. He gained a BA Hon's in 1987 and has exhibited
in many galleries across London including the Mall Galleries and the
Strand. He has an impressive record of solo exhibitions, contributed to
prestigious publications and has his own public collection at the
National Maritime Museum Liverpool.

He says of his working methods "I start to develop idea from photographs
and drawings, then work them into, developing and massaging a story into
the fabric of the image. I don't know exactly how my paintings are going
to end up like as the development takes over the process."

Martin has been fascinated by the male figure for many years. He paints
in the traditional way of Oil on canvas. He prefers oils and finds the
medium sympathetic to the way he works. He often changes the composition
during the process of paining the figure as the relationship between
sitter develops and unravels.  The figure is a wonderful subject to draw
and paint. Painting from life have given Martin an opportunity to
capture something about them, including intimacy and sexual energy. For
Martin, drawing and painting is as much about him as it is the model.
Over the past few years, Martin has been focussed on people who have
fled their countries seeking safety in the UK. Painting is about
searching for some sort of order and a response to the world which is
chaotic. He usually paint single figures which are introspective,
reflective and revealing. Aerial views of figures are something that
Martin has been focussing over the past 20 years. It’s still an untapped
compositional device that he keeps returning to. He paints figures
because there is a tension, a poise and balance in the human body.

Please join us in what promises to be an interesting but relaxed
demonstration.

Zoom invitation is at the foot of this email. Non member attendees will
be ask to join the society.

*Reminder Art Matters 16th April *

Deborah suggest that over the next couple of weeks you create something
inspired by Art History. This can be a modern day interpretation of an
old master - Beckenham Place park as seen by Turner? Le Déjeuner sur
l’herbe as a 2021 socially distanced picnic?  Your own cubist still
life? (Corey D’Augustine’s YouTube video here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGZYfSzvPvs
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGZYfSzvPvs> is a good introduction to
how to) Alternatively it can be really interesting to get under the skin
of a work you like by making a copy. The choice is yours.

Kind Regards,

Paul Stringfellow
