Deborah has kindly posted a review (below) of last week's "Rabbit
Meeting" and proposed a discussion for this coming week. Please note
that this meeting will start at 7pm. Friday 29th Jan at 7pm. Zoom
details to follow nearer the time.

------

Thank you to those who have renewed their membership. Please
encourage others to do so, and if we can find more members even
better.

A really big thank you to those who have given extra to help us
through this difficult period. Many of our costs have remained
whilst our income from exhibitions has disappeared. Of course many
others face this problem, but a small art society does not have many
reserves to draw on.

In this wintry weather you might wonder if you can paint in the
cold. https://justpaint.org/painting-in-the-cold/ has all the
answers you need, at least for the Golden range. I rather liked the
idea of painting with gin! Of course painters and decorators know
this too. There is a nice image of cracked paint from painting at
too low a temperature. I did look up what "minimum film formation
temperature" is about, but it is clearly too complex a subject.
Also, whilst I love walking in wintry conditions with good clothes
on, the idea of standing still to paint for hours has very limited
appeal in the cold. Please join Friday's discussion if you disagree.

The Royal College of Physicians holds many interesting historical
and artistic resources, including portraits of past presidents.
Some are going to be displayed on line during 2021. Keep an eye on

Dear All

After a discussion about timings next Friday’s meeting will be a
discussion one. This time a theme picked from the title of this
series Art Matters -

What matters to you in Art?

A simple question for next Fridays Social. Paul says I love the
friendship and kindship that can go along with creating something
that "sings" to people...hopefully.

Here is a recent different view and quote from someone else... and
I'm sure there are others.

"The arts make us better people - not morally better but more
thoughtful and more complex. Exposure to high art affects us over
time; it affects our capacity to understand and relate, and it
allows us to develop a personal heartland of images, sounds and
expressions that we can draw on. I have two favourite
paintings...." (Tessa Jowell, Culture Secretary)

If you participated in last weeks challenge (even if you didn’t make
the meeting or would like to make some last minute tweaks) and would
like us to post your rabbit on the website then please email to
exhibitions@bromleyartsociety.org.uk and we’ll get them posted.
(same ts&cs as the exhibition)

We decided at the meeting to try a later slot occasionally at least,
so next week’s meeting will start at 7pm and run as usual for c
1hour.

The Friday after that will be a demo from Melanie Cambridge at 6pm

For the meeting after that 12th February, we’d like to have another
Art Challenge. So I will take another executive decision and set the
theme of "In the City” as before any medium and interpretation
welcome and no need to spend long on it unless you want to.

Don't forget the Ring out the Old competition too. Entries have
started arriving so don’t get left behind! We’d like your entries in
by the 19th

Report on the meeting

I did originally worry that setting “homework” would frighten
people off and the meeting would consist of 2 or 3 people but I
needn’t have worried. We were joined by 13+ Artists with their
rabbits and as you might expect the meeting demonstrated the wealth
and diversity of talent we have in the Society. Works included quick
sketches, watercolours, acrylics, drawings, textiles, mixed media,
digital, ballpoint and collage! I am hoping that participants will
email me a photo of their work so we can post this on the website.
Everyone who wanted too was able to share their work and talk about
it. We had reasonable success with sharing screens (apart from
mine) and I hope I didn’t cut anyone off (very much a Learner
driver at the controls) so with a bit more practice I am sure that
this will become second nature but holding the work up to the screen
worked fine so there was no need to engage with the finer points of
Zoom unless you wished to.

Some new links

The following were suggested to the meeting participants:

The Royal Drawing School has recently started a new series of online
lectures: Creative Conversations. Last weeks was between 2 women
whose drawings are autobiographical and focus on the tension
between Motherhood and being an Artist. I am sure many members can
relate to this!. It is on their website if you would like to take a
look, as are many other past discussions and information about
future ones.
https://www.royaldrawingschool.org/lectures-events/?type=lectures

Slightly more unusual the London Mime Festival would normally be on
in theatres at this time. Instead they have posted many videos of
past performances in the Videotheque section of their website. My
experience of past attendance is that they range from the really
funny, to the really inspiring, to the What on earth was that all
about? My reason for sharing is a) you may find them interesting and
its free but the more relevant reason is having recently done a
couple of life drawing classes with moving models, I am sure this
would be a great opportunity to try this outt. Its only on til the
end of the month. https://mimelondon.com
