Our next Art Matters Meeting is on Friday 17th November at 7pm. Paul will circulate the zoom details nearer the time.

The theme is My Favourite art material or sketching/painting location. I am sure once again members will inspire us with their favourite brushes, secret sketching locations etc. The warning is that it often leads to visiting the Jacksons website! I thought I would start the ball rolling with some of my online recommendatlons. You may or may not already have come across them, and I have probably shared at least some of them before. But they are all doable from the comfort of your armchair - depending how messy you are when drawing/painting. I have dabbled with all of them at some point…

Regards

Adebanji Alade - new course

First Adebanji Alade (who you may have seen on the One Show). This popped up today. We did his RA sketch club session earlier this year and found it really inspiring, so I have high hopes. I have no doubt signing up will eventually lead to a lot of later upselling of his paid for courses but you can always unfollow later if you want to and it is free.

RA Sketch Club

Talking of RA sketch club. There are still a few of them buried in the RA website here https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/articles/tag/saturday-sketch-club Also if you search their website for life drawing you will find some of their online life drawing sessions - Search is top right hand corner of their website

Winslow Art Center

This is a US based Art school that has a ridiculous number of free 1 hour long demonstrations (about a 100 of them) + free sessions of Artists talking about their work. So there is bound to be something of interest. Most Artists are American but there are some British Artists too. You need to register on the website but I don't seem to have been bombarded with publcity emails since I have.
I have also paid for access to some of the recordings of online demos, recently one by Sarah Spackman who is an English Artist based in Oxford!

The Big Draw

The OCA had the following short course as part of the Big Draw this year. It is still open and you may find it interesting if slightly unusual. Diana Ali who was one of the mentors on the Great British Painting Challenge is one of the tutors. I can also see the previous Big Draw course from 2019 - but that maybe as I am a student with them anyway.

For the oil Painters

I used to subscribe to Studiotalk delivered by this group a one hour painting demo on Tuesday mornings then available via Facebook for a week. It’s a monthly subscription that seems to have doubled to £20 a month since I stopped and there is no free content. Martin Kinnear is definite marmite - you will either love him or hate him. He is very definite in his views and to my mind the associated Facebook group workships him to a positively unhealthy degree. BUT if you are starting out as an oil painter watching his demonstrations will leave you with a very clear idea of how it should be done (per Martin) . The demos were usually in the style of a particular contemporary or classical artist (he workshops Turner and loves the Scottish Colourists). You will come away knowing how to do it, whether that is painting alla prima or by glazing. The studio oils piece that is included is worth taking a look at as a good basic introduction. I had just had enough...

Abstract and Acrylics

And finally if your interest is Abstract/Acrylic you may find Louise Fletcher’s online stuff interesting. A lot of it is paid for/not particularly cheap but there is a fair amount of free content on youtube etc. In the past at any rate she has done a free online course every summer. I know a lot of people who have been really Inspired by this. Again there is a bit of a hard sell out the paid for content but the free stuff is definitely worth looking at and if you do decide to sign up it is only one month at a time I believe.
